Find out what our team has been up to.
Next up for our staff spotlight series is Josh Quayle! Josh has a unique role as an Equipment Technician in our custom machinery division and is a huge asset to our team at ALP.
1) How long have you worked at Associated?
I'm not quite sure, but it’s been at least 6 years. I’m no veteran, but it’s the longest I’ve been at a company, that’s for sure!
2) Describe your journey at Associated so far.
It's been a wild ride. I started in the warehouse, loading the presses with rolls of white BOP and semi-gloss. I loved it, mostly because I got to know everyone on the production floor.
At the time, our Equipment Division was expanding into a new building. Our Plant Manager sent me over to help with the move, and the next thing you know, I’m running airlines in the ceiling and working on some labelling equipment. I have an electrical background, and I was born to tinker with machinery, so it was the perfect fit. From there, I started working full-time with Roy, our Equipment Manager. I’ve travelled all over Canada, been to California and gone as far East as Virginia to work on our machines. Associated is everywhere. Again, a wild ride!
3) How would you describe the work environment?
It only took my first day to love the environment here. No matter what department you work in or what role you have, everyone is happy and friendly. I’ve made a lot of good friends here, people that I trust and spend time with outside of work. It’s just something very hard to create in a company, but here? It’s just easy.
4) What is your favourite thing about working here?
There are plenty to list but, for me, it’s the Equipment Division I work in and the group that makes it. They’re all smarter than I am, and I’m fine with that. I can’t learn what I already know, right? We communicate and understand one another. I’m trusted to do the tasks set in front of me, and even when I mess up, we rally together and go again.
5) What's been your best day at work so far?
My best day at work was when I wasn’t working! I was sent to Chicago to install a new line with our labelling machine. I got everything installed in half the time we’d allotted and got to enjoy the city afterwards. I loved the place and loved the experience. A great day at the office, if you ask me!
6) What are you most proud of since working here?
My wife sends me to do grocery shopping on my own! But it’s not what you think. I’m always critiquing our labels at the store, especially the ones that I know have been applied by our labelling machines. I’m proud that, even though these products do not have our name on them, we’ve worked behind the scenes to make all of this possible. I respect the supply chain and the people who are a part of it. That is what I’m proud of.
7) What is the biggest challenge you've had since working here?
It's difficult to service production machinery solo, especially when you’re across the country. Even with a second technician, you have the whole facility pressuring you to get things up and running because they need to meet deadline. The product being labelled could also sour if production is halted for too long. I’ve learned to be stronger emotionally. My job can be challenging, but I believe in my abilities and do what I do best. You can’t control how people react to you, only how you react to them.
8) Do you have a particular memory or moment at Associated that stands out for you?
A recent memory, actually: having my first child. I keep things close to my heart, but when my daughter came into my life, I just ran out and told everyone at work who’d listen. I look back and realize that I have family here too at Associated. I was so comfortable sharing this life-changing experience with them all. Thank you to those who’ve listened to me ramble on about her!
9) What does a typical day look like for you, and what are you currently working on?
Coffee first! Then we meet to discuss current and future projects and R&D. At the moment, there is lots of local servicing and preparing for blueberry season for the summer. Currently, we’re working on a full system that labels cans of beer. We’re throwing all of the cool stuff on it since it will be part of a trade show this year.
10) Describe the advancement opportunities here.
You have to want it. I know colleagues who have been in practically every department here. Suppose you have a particular strength in one area. In that case, Associated will put you somewhere that best suits you and can help with your development. They did that for me! Roy saw a troubled youth and made me into a refined automation technician. Thanks again, boss!
11) How does Associated support professional development?
Associated could put you through schooling if you proved you wanted it! I did a 12-month management and leadership course. I mean… they will invest in you! If you invest heavily into yourself, I believe Associated will help support your professional endeavours. It’s amazing stuff!
12) What is on your wish list for the next 5 years?
I want the Equipment Division to grow; we have so much to offer. Personally, I wish for people to live their lives before it’s too late. A lot can happen in 5 years; make it your absolute best 5 years.
13) Given the chance, who would you be for a day?
If wwe’re talking fictional, I’d be Mr. Bean because who doesn’t like a funny guy? If it's non-fiction, it’d have to be Rowan Atkinson because who doesn’t like a funny guy?
Businesses across diverse industries choose Associated Labels & Packaging to expand their product lines.
